Avatars resizing?

Has something changed with how they instantly re-size to fit when you get an image? I remember it use to re size to fit the total dimensions you could have I thought. However now whenever I find one i want to use it seems to re size height and width equally until both fit into the dimension requirements resulting in a smaller image. I preferred the old way if it indeed has changed

I think it has always been like that actually. Preserving dimensions also doesn't mess up the proportions of an image. o/)
